If your internet works, it's easy to leave it alone. But "works" and "good value" aren't the same thing.

According to a WhistleOut survey, 43% of Australians have been on the same internet plan for three or more years. For people aged 54 and over, it's 69%.

Start with what you actually need

  • 1–2 people, light use: browsing, email, a bit of streaming.
  • Family streaming: several screens at once.
  • Work from home or gamers: video calls, big uploads, low lag.

Paying for a top speed you never use is money down the drain. Too slow and everyone's yelling about buffering. Not sure? Try our NBN speed and price check.

Read the conditions

Before you sign anything, check:

  • Intro prices. When does the discount end, and what's the price after?
  • Contract length. Month to month, or locked in?
  • Exit fees on your current plan.
  • Modem. Can you use your own, or do you have to pay for theirs?
  • Speed during busy hours. Look for the typical evening speed, not just the plan name.

Ask your current provider first

Ring up and ask for their current price for the same speed. Mention you're thinking of leaving. Here are some scripts that work. Sometimes that's all it takes.

Before you switch

  1. Note your current plan, price and any promo end date.
  2. Shortlist two or three plans at the speed you need.
  3. Compare the yearly cost after any intro discount ends.
  4. Check modem and exit fees.
  5. Sign up with the new provider first. They usually handle the switch, so you're not left offline.

So, is it worth it?

If you've been on the same plan for years, or a promo has ended, it's worth a check. Prices change all the time, so we don't guess what you should pay. Send us your bill and we'll check it against today's plans.
